Construction on the three happened in stages however essentially the masterplan for the development of the pier head area was thought up by Sir William Gladstone in the very early 19th Century. The first of the three was the Port of Liverpool building which opened in 1907, then the Liver Building featuring the famous liver bird which opened in 1911 and finally the Cunard Building in 1917.
