The Shard is the tallest building in the UK and the 2nd tallest free standing structure in the UK with it being second to the Emley Moor transmitting station. Due to its size and potential human load, the foundations of the building had to be extremely deep and carefully considered by the architect and engineers. Construction began in 2009 and finished in 2012, this then opened in 2013 after risk assessments and careful consideration of the safety of the building.
