The Metropolitan Cathedral of Christ the King (nicknamed ‘Paddy’s Wigwam’), Liverpool is an extremely interesting piece of architecture due to its design and how this was developed. Plans for the Cathedral started in the mid 19th Century and were passed through several architects who scales the projects down further each time due to financial issues, especially due to the first and second world war. Lutyens design was originally started in 1933 and it proposed the Cathedral to be the second largest in the world with the largest domed roof in the world. However, due to World War II the scheme became too costly and was abandoned at the crypts construction in 1958 which remain today. Then two architects later, Gibberd proposed his radical design which began in 1962. It was a much more scaled down design than Lutyens and sat on the crypts of his design. However it still retained the monumental characteristics of the design. If this design later had its faults and the cathedral authorities sued Gibberd for £1.3 million. However, the building still stands today and retains its monumental and iconic appearance which many across Liverpool love
